Delayed Tax Return

ETV chairman, MD indicted

A Dhaka court yesterday framed charges against the chairman and managing director of Ekushey Television (ETV) in a case filed against them for not submitting their tax returns within the stipulated time.
Judge Mohammad Jahurul Haque of the Senior Special Judge's Court of Dhaka read out the charges against Chairman Abdus Salam and Managing Director Ashraful Alam. The duo pleaded not guilty.
The court fixed July 12 for starting trial and asked complainant of the case to appear before it on that day.
Abu Sayeed Sohel, deputy tax commissioner of National Board of Revenue (NBR), on March 20 this year filed the case against the accused.
According to the case statement, the duo did not submit their income tax returns for the fiscal years from 2008 to 2011 within the stipulated time.
The complainant also said the NBR served them notices on January 29, 31 and February 15 this year. But they did not appear before it to explain why they had failed to submit their returns in time.
Moreover, the duo did not seek more time to submit their income tax returns, the complainant alleged.
