Nannu's death mourned

Different organisations yesterday condemned the untimely death of renowned ex-national footballer Monawar Hossain Nannu.
One of the brightest stars in a glittering past for Bangladesh football, the midfielder who once strode the pitch like a titan, finally succumbed to his long battle with cancer.
He was pronounced dead at 8:30am yesterday morning, on his way to a hospital.
His namaaz-e-janaza was held at the Bangabandhu National Stadium, Sonali Otit and the Abahani ground.
He was 60.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee expressed their shock and sadness at the sudden demise of one of the country's biggest sportsman.
Abahani also bemoaned the death of one of her greatest sons. The midfielder who turned up for the Sky Blues between 1974-1982, enjoyed tremendous acclaim and was a fan favourite.
Abahani's arch-rival Mohammedan Sporting Club and Sheikh Russell also expressed their grief at the death of a national award winner.
Bangladesh Sports Writers Association (BSWA) also expressed their regrets at the passing away of the man who won the 1974 BSWA Footballer of the Year prize.
He was laid to rest at the Mirpur Intellectual Martyrs Graveyard.
