Case against Haji Selim, 25 others withdrawn

The government yesterday withdrew a case filed against former Awami League lawmaker Haji Mohammad Selim and some 25 others considering it “politically motivated”.
On July 2, 2006, the then sub-inspector of Lalbagh Police Station, Harun-or-Rashid, filed the case under Law and Order Disruption Crimes (Speedy Trial) Act 2002 while the Awami League-led 14-party alliance was observing a countrywide blockade of highways, railways and river routes.
A press release from Dhaka city unit Awami League said Selim and the others surrendered yesterday before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court-1 Dhaka, which allowed a prayer for the case's withdrawal.
Selim had earlier prayed for the withdrawal through the authorities concerned. The other accused include Zafar Ahmed Rana, Md Santu, Anwar Iqbal, Sagar Ahmed Shahin, Rinku and Moga Selim.
