Drug addict allegedly tries to sell his baby boy for Tk 2,000

Police arrested a drug addict in Bhairab municipality area yesterday for allegedly trying to sell his five-month-old child for Tk 2,000.
Locals said Monir Hossain, 27, son of Jabbar Mia of Chandiber Dakkhin Para village under Bhairab Police Station, was trying to sell his son Rabbi to Marjina Begum, 45, of Dipoghat area in Bhairab Bazar.
Marjina advanced him Tk 500 and was supposed to give the rest of money after handing over the child yesterday. But Monir could not keep his word as police arrested him in the morning.
Monir's sister Asma Begum said, “My brother is addicted to heroin. He sold everything he had. Now he is trying to sell his five-month-old son Rabbi to buy drug”.
Marjina told police that she did not want to purchase the boy. “I just want to bring up the boy as I have no child,” she said.
Monir married Sabina Akhter, 23, daughter of Alkas Mia of Gouripur village in Raipura village of Narshingdi about nine years ago. They have four children. On Friday, he beat up Sabina as she failed to give him money to buy drug.
“As I came to know that Monir had sold Rabbi to a woman, I came out of our Bhairab Bazar house, taking my child in lap and took shelter at a relative's house in the town,” Sabina said.
Being informed by Asma, police arrested Monir from the bank of Meghna River and took him to Bhairab Police station.
Monir did not admit to selling his boy to Marjina. “I took money from the woman as loan,” he said.
Police were quizzing Monir at the police station as of filing this report at 5:00pm yesterday.
