Concern over threats on Samakal editor

Editors of 15 dailies yesterday condemned and expressed concern over death threats on Golam Sarwar, editor of Bangla newspaper Samakal, by unidentified callers.
In a joint statement of the Newspaper Owners' Association of Bangladesh, they termed the threat a severe impediment to freedom of speech and demanded arrest and exemplary punishment to the culprits.
The signatories of the statement are: Reazuddin Ahmed, editor of The News Today; Mahfuz Anam, editor and publisher of The Daily Star; Matiur Rahman, editor of Prothom Alo; Anwar Hossain Monju, editor of Dainik Ittefaq; Matiur Rahman Chowdhury, editor-in-chief of Manabzamin; Shyamol Dutta, editor of Bhorer Kagoj; AMM Bahauddin, editor of Dainik Inqilab; Moazzem Hossain, editor of The Financial Express; Mozammel Haque, editor of Karotoa; Taslimuddin Chowdhury, editor of Purbokone; MA Malek, editor of Dainik Azadi; Saiful Alam, executive editor of Jugantor; and Mahbubul Alam, editor of The Independent.
Golam Sarwar received death threats over his office land phone several times for publishing reports on the disappearance of BNP leader M Ilias Ali.
He filed a general diary with police in this connection seeking security.
