Dyeing unit fined for polluting river

The Department of Environment (DoE) has realised Tk 32 lakh in fines from a textile dyeing industry in Gazipur for polluting the river Turag.
A mobile team headed by DoE Director (enforcement) Mohammed Munir Chowdhury yesterday fined the Tex Europe (BD), a textile dyeing industry.
The team found the effluent treatment plant (ETP) of the industry stopped apparently for reducing operational costs.
The DoE team immediately tested water sample from the wastes discharged by the factory.
According to the Bangladesh Environment Conservation Laws 1995 (amendment 2010) the optimum level of dissolved oxygen in water is 4.5 milligram to 8 mg per litre while the Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) is 200 mg per litre.
But in the tests of the waste water sample of the factory they found the COD 439 mg per litre and dissolved oxygen zero.
Managing director of the industry Abdul Majid Khan was also directed to start the ETP immediately.
The industry took permission for dyeing 12 tonnes of cloth every day but they were dyeing around 20 tonnes.
