Remembering Alamgir Kumkum

Noted film director Alamgir Kumkum passed away on February 27. He was the founder president of Bangladesh Chalachchitra Parichalok Samity. Alamgir Kumkum was also founder president of Bangladesh Film Club and president of Bangabandhu Shangskritik Jote.
He stepped into filmdom with director ER Khan in 1968. As an assistant director to Khan, Alamgir Kumkum worked in the films -- “Chena Ochena”, “Roopban-er Roopkatha” and “Madhubala”.
He first directed “Padma Nadir Majhi” in 1969. Popular films directed by Alamgir Kumkum include “Amor Shongi”, “Mayer Doa”, “Jibon Chhobi”, “Sonar Cheye Daami”, “Smritituku Thak”, “Gunda”, “Raajbondi” and “Rajar Raja”. The director was a close associate of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
“I heard the sad news while I was busy with shooting in Hemayetpur. I kept thinking that life is so unpredictable. I have many fond memories with Alamgir Kumkum. All my favourite people are leaving this world one after another,” said veteran actor Razzak.
“Alamgir Kumkum discovered and initiated me in films. He was like my guardian. I wish for the eternal peace of his departed soul,” said seasoned actor Alamgir.
“Alamgir Kumkum was my nephew and just one year junior to me. He was a big hearted person,” said Chashi Nazrul Islam.
“We were very close. We have accomplished much together as members of Bangabandhu Shangskritik Jote. Alamgir Kumkum was a great soul,” recalled actor Faruk.
“We were like members of the same family as we worked for the same medium. I have written many songs for his films. He always had a cheerful disposition,” said noted lyricist Gazi Mazharul Anwar.
“Alamgir Kumkum had no foe in the film industry. Personalities like him are rarely found. He would always keep himself amid happiness. May Allah keep him in eternal peace,” said actor Uzzal.
