Boy hurt at home as criminals open fire

A boy of seven was injured by bullets after local “extortionists” opened fire at his residence in the city's Mohakhali area yesterday morning.
Nahid Hassan Nishat, son of Bashir Miah of Mohakhali Wireless Gate area, received three bullets in his legs and was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Bashir said around 7:45am he heard someone knocking at the door when he was preparing his son -- class I student at Banani Bidya Niketan -- for school.
"I didn't open the door when the person identified himself as Uzzal, a local goon," he mentioned.
As he did not respond, Uzzal fired four shots from outside the door, leaving Nahid injured.
Witnesses said two criminals wearing helmets opened fire and fled the spot.
Bashir works for a construction firm and also looks after water and electricity supplies to Beltala slum in Mohakhali.
He complained that some local goons extort him and have been demanding more money recently.
Contacted, Gulshan police said they have detained two persons for interrogation in this connection.
