Rangpur MP sued for chaos in hospital

A general diary and a case was filed against Jatiya Party lawmaker Hossain Mokbul Shahriar Asif yesterday in connection with the violence at Rangpur Medical College Hospital on Saturday.
Secretary of the employees union of Rangpur Medical College Hospital Moshiur Rahman lodged the case with Rangpur Police Station against lawmaker Asif and six of his associates while hospital director Toufiqul Islam filed the general diary with the same police station.
In the case, the complainant said Asif and his accomplices attacked the employees of the hospital when they came forward to defend the director of the hospital from Asif's and his accomplices' attack.
On Saturday, five truckloads of stick-wielding Jatiya Party activists, led by Asif, nephew of JP chief HM Ershad, went to Rangpur Medical College Hospital to demand 30 class-III and class-IV jobs for his party men, sources said. The employees of the hospital set up a barricade between the JP activists and the hospital director's office. A clash ensued and law enforcers had to fire 40 teargas canisters and use truncheons to dispel the feuding sides. Lawmaker Asif, eight journalists and seven policemen were among 50 injured.
Asif, having treatment for his injuries at a VIP cabin of Rangpur Medical College Hospital, held a press conference in his room Saturday night.
He told journalists that he had gone to the hospital to submit a memorandum to the director of the hospital asking him to stop manipulation and irregularities in the appointment of class-III and class-IV employees at the hospital.
He alleged that contractor of the health department Motazzerul Islam Mithu had been controlling all appointments in the hospital. “I wanted to meet the director of the hospital at his chamber to know why…But before I could go there, some employees beat me up,” he added.
The lawmaker alleged that Mithu influenced the employees to attack him.
