Sylhet BNP calls hartal on Dec 1

Sylhet district and city units of BNP announced a series of programmes, including a daylong hartal in the district on December 1, protesting the government's "inaction" against the move by the Indian government to construct Tipaimukh Dam.
M Ilyas Ali, BNP district unit president also demanded immediate cancellation of the project saying that it would cause serious havoc in the north-eastern region of Bangladesh.
India had earlier promised that it would not take any steps regarding the dam that could harm Bangladesh.
The opposition leaders announced the programme at a press conference at a community centre in the city yesterday afternoon.
The programme include, mass rally in Court point area and procession in the city on November 24, procession and rally at upazila level on November 26, procession by Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal at the city on November 27, rally and procession by Jatiyatabadi Shechhasebak Dal in the city on November 28, rally and procession by the district and city BNP and other front organisations on November 30 and hartal in the district and upazilas on December 1.
M Ilyas Ali, also central organising secretary of the party, read out the statement while former lawmaklers Dilder Hossain Selim, city president MA Haque, vice-president Nasim Hossain, general secretary Abdul Quaiyum Jalali and district general secretary Abdul Gaffar also addressed.
