Boy kidnapped in Rangpur rescued, one arrested

Pirgachha police on Tuesday rescued a teenage boy who was kidnapped on 10 November for Tk1 lakh ransom.
Police and locals said Sajib Mian, 14, son of a day-labourer Abdur Rashid of Chalunia village under Koykuri union in Pirgachha upazila was allured by Jahangir Alam of Taluk Isad village in the name of arranging a better job in Dhaka.
Jahangir took the boy to Narayanganj and locked him in a house near Signboard area. Later he handed him over to a gang of human traffickers. But Sajib managed to flee to Munsiganj and take shelter at a house there.
Jahangir went to Munshiganj and promised to the boy's family that he will send Sajib to his house. But he took Sajib to Narayanganj again and handed over to traffickers. The gang locked Sajib at an unknown place and demanded Tk1lakh ransom from his father over cell phone. They also threatened him not to disclose this to anybody including police.
Abdur Rashid, father of the boy, however, sought police help. Zahid Hossain Chowdhury, officer in-charge of Pirgachha police station assigned SI Fazlul Haque with the task to trace the criminals and rescue the boy.
Under police instruction, the boy's family contacted the kidnapers. During negotiation with the kidnappers, it was agreed that the ransom money would be handed over at Pirgachha.
When Jahangir Alam along with Sajib came to collect the money at Pirgachha, plainclothes policemen appeared at the scene.
But sensing that it was a trap, Jahangir fled the spot immediately.
Police recovered the boy and handed him over to his family members.
Police later arrested Jahangir Alam from Chalunia village in the upazila and sent him to jail.
A case has been filed with Pirgachha police station in this connection.
