Prachyanat stages Circus Circus in India

“Circus Circus”, a post-Liberation War saga, circles around a circus troupe.

Theatre troupe Prachyanat staged its acclaimed production “Circus Circus” in Berhampur, India recently. The Bangladeshi troupe staged the play at a weeklong theatre festival titled “Natya Shamaraha Utshab 2011”, organised by local troupe Rangashram.
“Circus Circus”, a post-Liberation War saga which circles around a circus troupe, was staged on November 3. The 22-member Bangladeshi troupe returned to the country on November 5. According to the troupe members, the audience of Berhampur lauded the performance by the Prachyanat artistes. Well known troupes from all over West Bengal took part in the festival.
“Circus Circus” narrates the struggles of the rural circus troupe, The Great Bengal Circus. The play also depicts cultural oppression in the name of religion in post-Liberation War Bangladesh.
During the Liberation War, The Great Bengal Circus lost much of its reputation. After the death of the owner Lakkhan Das in the war, his brother Shadhon Das takes charge of the troupe and makes a great effort to recover its lost prestige.
The troupe lands a major offer and comes to a remote area to perform. The first few days go well but gradually they realise that they are not wholly welcome in the area. They face bigotry and discrimination by religious fanatics.
Azad Abul Kalam, Shakhawat H Rezvi, JahangirAlam, Rahul Anand, Shatabdi Wadud, Reetu Sattar and Shahana Shumi enact lead roles in the play.
Md. Saiful Islam did the set and light designing. Rahul Anand was the music director.
