Rule of extortion must end first

Citizens, especially the business community, of Narayanganj now like to remind Selina Hayat Ivy about easing their woes.
They suggest she continue to discuss with people of all strata -- as she did in the last eight years -- to end the industrial city's problems, mainly extortion, and upgrade people's standard of living with enhanced facilities.
“Ivy is a tested leader. We believe she will do well,” said Manjurul Haque, senior vice-president of Narayanganj Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Her stance against extortion, terrorism and illegal occupation, a position she shares with the local businessmen, will help eradicate these problems, he said.
According to him, traffic congestion, water-logging and crisis of safe water are the three issues that the mayor should look into right away.
A doctor by profession, Ivy became the mayor of Narayanganj municipality in 2003. She was re-elected in early 2010. She has, according to locals, administered the municipality in a way that even her political rivals could never bring any allegation of graft, nepotism or hooliganism against her.
Noted educationalist Kashem Jamal is optimistic about Ivy. He said, “Everyone is aware of her capabilities. We hope she will be able to fulfil everyone's expectation.”
Jamal, who is also involved in business, said issues like poor infrastructure and extortion, which are hindering industrial growth, should be addressed on a priority basis.
“Backward yet important areas like Bandar and Siddhirganj need much attention and more development initiatives through discussions with all,” he said.
Hanif Mohammad Selim, general secretary of Narayanganj Jewellery Owners' Association, said Ivy took many development initiatives in the past. She also took measures to stop extortion and overcome other obstacles to businesses.
“Hopefully, she will keep up the good work in the future,” he added.
Ivy's victory in the election is a testament of the people's support for fairness and sincerity, Shahed Ali Majnu, a renowned poet and lyricist, said.
Shankar Saha, general secretary of Bangladesh Puja Udjapon Committee, Narayanganj unit, said people always admired Ivy's leadership as she is non-communal.
“Ivy won by a landslide as she is well-known for her honesty and sincerity,” he said, adding that the people's expectation will be met “if she remains as everyone knows her to be”.
