Rajshahi Silk Factory to reopen this year

Rajshahi Silk Factory, which remained closed for about nine years, will reopen by this year.
Bangladesh Bank (BB) has decided to give loan with easy interest rate to the silk farmers with a view to developing the industry.
City Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton disclosed this while addressing a seminar at Silk Bhaban on Tuesday.
Silk is a valuable asset of Rajshahi region. So, the government has taken the initiative for development of the industry through restoring its past glory, he said.
The mayor said that the silk factory, which was shut during the tenure of 4-party alliance government, will be reopened by this year and the marginal farmers will be given loan with easy terms. BB took up a project in this regard, he added.
The silk factory was closed on November 30, 2002 with a burden of loss of Tk 1.13 crore, sources said.
Launched in 1961 with 471 workers and staff members, the factory earned profit till 1975. It started facing loss since it was handed over to silk board in 1978. It incurred a total loss of Tk 39 crore prior to its closing, factory sources said.
