Arms, Drugs Cases

Mayor Tayebur's trial begins today

Trial of the Arms Act case and another case under Narcotics Control Act against detained Khulna City Corporation (KCC) mayor Sheikh Tayebur Rahman will begin in the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court today.
The cases were filed with Khulna Sadar Police Station on November 4 last year as joint forces during a raid at his Khulna residence on November 3 recovered arms and liquor.
Charge sheets of these two cases were pressed to the court on December 25.
Lawyers defending the mayor in all the eleven cases against him will file a petition with the court today with an appeal to send him to Dhaka for better medical treatment as his health condition is deteriorating due to hypertension, diabetes, arthritis and cardio vascular problems, sources said.
The detained mayor was quickly sent back to jail from court on Monday on health ground. He was produced there on that day in connection with an extortion case filed against him and 14 others with Khulna Sadar Police Station on November 23 last year by trader Abdul Quddus.
