SC to arrange training for lower court judges

The Supreme Court has taken a move to provide special training to lower court judges through Bangladesh Public Administration Training Centre (BPATC) and Bangladesh Military Academy (BMA) to enhance their administrative, mental and physical competencies.
BPATC is the apex training institute in public sector and BMA is the prestigious training institute for the officer cadets of the army, navy and air force.
The SC authorities last week sent a letter to the ministry of law, justice and parliamentary affairs to take appropriate measures to arrange the training for the judges at the institutes to develop interaction among judicial, administrative and military cadres, said court sources.
SC Registrar M Asraful Islam said that the SC authorities have requested the government to arrange special training for judicial officials to develop their interaction with other cadres.
Law Minister Shafique Ahmed told The Daily Star that he was not informed whether the SC authorities has sent any letter to his ministry in this regard.
He also said the government would take decision after his ministry receives the letter.
The country's lower courts have 1,256 judges, and the newly appointed judges are now given only judicial training through Judicial Administration Training Institute (JATI) since 1996.
The judges were given training through BPATC before JATI was established, according to the sources.
If the judges are provided trainings through BPATC and BMA, judicial officials will learn driving, physical exercise and discipline other than academic lessons, a high official in the apex court told The Daily Star requesting anonymity.
He added that the inferiority complex among the judicial officials and the bureaucrats and armed forces will be removed, and interaction and cooperation among them will be developed, if judicial officials are provided the trainings.
