IGP denies allegations of torture

Inspector General of Police Hasan Mahmud Khondker yesterday denied allegations of torture on detained BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury under police remand.
Controversial BNP lawmaker Salahuddin Qader Chowdhury was arrested from a house in Banani early December 16, and he is now being interrogated under five-day police remand in connection with a murder case.
Family members of Chowdhury alleged that he has been tortured under police custody.
"As per my information, he has not been tortured as he is being interrogated as per the process of law," he told reporters replying to a question on the sidelines of the final of the Bangladesh Police Basketball Championship 2010 at Rajarbagh police line in the afternoon.
About upcoming hartal on December 26, the IGP said police has been taking all out preparations to maintain peace during the hartal hour.
Sammilita Olama Mashayekh Parishad called the countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal on December 26 to protest the National Education Policy.
Khondker said trouble-makers will be handled with iron hand. "People who will try to create anarchy will be prevented with iron hand."
About Sabotage act, he said all security measures have been taken to keep in mind all possible acts.
