Police raid Jamaat office for Taher

Police raided the central office of Jamaat-e-Islami at Moghbazar in the capital yesterday to arrest former Jamaat lawmaker Abdullah Mohammad Taher.
However, none was arrested and nothing seized during the raid from 1:00pm to 2:00pm.
Syed Nurul Islam, additional deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Ramna zone, told The Daily Star that police and officials of Detective Branch (DB) raided the Jamaat office upon receiving information that a meeting was being held there to make plans for some subversive activities.
Monirul Islam, deputy commissioner of DB (South), said the main objective of the raid was to arrest Taher, former lawmaker of the religion-based political party.
Taher, former president of Jamaat's student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir and an executive member of the party, on August 4 said Jamaat has its own reserve force which will be used against the government at the appropriate time.
A number of cases have been lodged in connection with his statement in Dhaka, Bogra and Gopalganj.
Meanwhile, ATM Azharul Islam, Jamaat's acting secretary general, protested the police raid and alleged it was part of political harassment.
A written statement signed by Jamaat's Publicity Secretary Mohammad Tasnim Alam said the raid was intended for tarnishing the image of the party.
