Int'l Right to Know Day observed

Different organisations held different programmes to mark the International Right to Know Day yesterday.
The day was first established and celebrated on September 28, 2003, with the aim to raise awareness so that all individuals can practise their right to government-held information.
The information may include how elected officials are exercising power and how the taxpayers' money is being spent.
Equity and Justice Working Group Bangladesh (EquityBD) organised a human chain in front of National Press Club, where speakers demanded full transparency and information flow on funds for development and climate change.
EquityBD member, Mostafa Kamal, said increasing corruption among government officials is still causing deprivation of the poor.
He demanded incorporation of corruption risk assessment policy, information disclosure policy, and complaint response mechanism into all development projects.
Among others, Prodip Kumar Roy of Online Knowledge Centre, and Firoj Ahmed of Lead Trust spoke.
Socheton Nagarik Committee and Savar branch of Transparency International Bangladesh organised a discussion, a bicycle rally, a cultural programme and a documentary film show at Savar on the occasion.
