Stalkers overpowering policemen

Alarming news indeed

The criminality topped off by a dash of dare- devilry of girl stalkers is edging out in a newer direction. This was witnessed in the city's Nikunja area on Tuesday, when they went to the extent of attacking and injuring four policemen, snatching away a pistol from an SI of police in the process.
They have been responsible for causing quite a few suicides, of mostly teenaged girls, who could not bear the psychological trauma of being teased and harassed every day. The government has adopted some measures to rein in the unruly young men who have developed the habit of harassing girls. Police were deployed in front of girls' schools and colleges. However, the problem is yet to be resolved as girls are targeted in many other places as well.
Despite all that has happened, sexual harassment is yet to be treated with the seriousness it merits in the present context. The young men who assaulted the police and escaped with a pistol cannot be treated as ordinary criminals. One cannot shrug off the rather disquieting thought of how badly exposed the ordinary people are to criminals when the police allow themselves to be overpowered. If the stalkers could beat up the policemen, what would they do when it comes to unarmed guardians of helpless girls? This is alarming news, to say the least.
The targeted girl is reportedly the niece of a ruling party activist. Just think of it, since most people do not have such connections how much more their vulnerability must be.
Eve teasing was once the pastime of young men treated with disdain by society at large. Perhaps nobody took them seriously enough to think about police action against them. But the situation has changed . Now the stalkers have become a lot more aggressive and are making it difficult for girls to move freely. So, it is a question of protecting girls from the hands of the hooligans.
The Nikunja incident should make the police realise the gravity of the situation. They cannot leave people exposed to such criminals. If necessary they should raise a special group, trained in overpowering even armed criminals. It surely made derogatory news that police were knocked off by stalkers.
