Afghan war returnee held in Satkhira

17 Jamaat, Shibir men remanded

An activist of Jamaat Debhata upazila unit was arrested yesterday while seven leaders and activists of Jamaat and Shibir, arrested on July 17 in Sadar upazila, were taken on a three-day remand the same day.
Detectives raided Narkeli village under the upazila early yesterday and arrested Ziaur Rahman, 42, from his house.
DB sources said Ziaur was planning to carry out subversive activities in Debhata upazila.
Sub-Inspector Amal Kumar of DB said Ziaur went to Afghanistan and actively took part in war. After returned home, he joined Jamaat-e-Islami and was involved in recruiting people to take part in jihad, he added
Meanwhile, the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court here yesterday placed seven leaders and activists of Jamaat and Shibir on a three-day remand. They were arrested in Satkhira Sadar upazila on the night of July 17 on sedition charge.
They arrestees are Kari Akramuzzaman, Sabbir Rahman, Nadim Hossain, Hasanuzzaman, Shafiqul Islam, Israfil Hossain and Abdul Kader.
Police said they picked up the Jamaat and Shibir men from a meeting where they were planning to carry out subversive activities in Satkhira district.
Court sources said Sub-inspector (SI) Asaduzzaman of Satkhira Sadar Police Station produced them in the court with a prayer for seven days' remand on July 18. The court fixed August 3 for hearing on the remand prayer.
After hearing, Judge Samsul Arefin yesterday placed the Jamaat and Shibir men on a three-day remand.
