Case against Sheikh Selim quashed

A High Court bench yesterday in a verdict quashed all proceedings against Awami League leader Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim in a criminal case filed on charge of attacking the motorcade of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in 2001.
The bench of Justice Md Shamsul Huda and Justice Abu Bakar Siddiquee delivered the verdict after hearing a petition filed by Selim for quashing the proceedings against him.
The court observed that there was no element of any criminal offence against the petitioner in this case.
Assistant Attorney General Bashir Ullah yesterday told The Daily Star that the motorcade of Khaleda came under the attack in Keraniganj while she was going to Pirojpur during her regime on June 16, 2001.
Local BNP leader Hazi Nazimuddin on January 14, 2002 filed the case with Keraniganj Police Station against 25 to 30 persons in this connection.
Police submitted a charge sheet implicating Sheikh Selim to the trial court on May 30, 2003.
Selim filed the petition on July 16, 2003.
Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh appeared for the petitioner, while Deputy Attorney General Md Salim and Assistant Attorney General Zakir Hossain Ripan stood for the state.
