RU Shibir chief remanded in explosives case

Rajshahi University Shibir president Shamsul Alam Golap was taken on a seven-day police remand yesterday in connection with a case involving recovery of explosives.
Golap, the FIR-named accused in the killing of BCL worker Faruk Hossain and assault on police cases filed over RU violence on February 9, was produced before Rajshahi Metropolitan Magistrate Court around 3:00pm.
Ruhul Amin, an injured Bangladesh Chhatra League activist, lodged the case on February 15 after several live bombs were recovered from Shibir controlled rooms at Shah Makhdum hall.
Rajshahi Metropolitan Magistrate Ziaur Rahman granted seven days' remand against a police prayer for 10 days', said Mrinal Bhattachariya, assistant commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police.
The court also rejected Golap's bail prayer, he added.
Golap was taken to Rajshahi after his arrest by Rab in Dhaka and later handed over to Motihar Police Station early yesterday.
Earlier, Jamaat leader Gias Uddin and RU Shibir leader Ekram Hossain in their confessional statements before the same court said Golap and RU Shibir general secretary Mobarak Hossain directly coordinated and participated in the RU violence.
Both Golap and Mobarak were in contact with top local Jamaat leaders on February 8 night.
