Iftekhar seeks Yangon move to solve bilateral problems

Foreign Adviser Iftekhar A Chowdhury yesterday asked a visiting Myanmar trade delegation to expedite the ongoing bilateral projects and move to resolve the long-standing problems between the two countries.
He said the 25km border road link, contract farming and the tripartite UN, Myanmar and Bangladesh body to resolve the Rohingya issue should be given priority for quick resolution.
Iftekhar made these suggestions when a visiting Myanmar trade delegation, led by Myanmar Deputy Commerce Minister U Aung Tun, called on him at the foreign ministry.
The visiting delegation also called on Finance Adviser Mirza Azizul Islam earlier in the day, where Azizul reiterated Bangladesh's proposal to use the new-found Myanmar gas to produce fertiliser in Bangladesh, that would be exported back across the border.
The visiting delegation told Iftekhar about the "roadmap of the Myanmar government for restoration of full democracy."
"Bangladesh supports the Gambari initiative and we are also happy with the visit of Paulo Pinheiro, special envoy on human rights," Iftekhar was quoted by a foreign ministry press release as telling the Myanmar delegation.
"We understand the complexity of the Myanmar issue and also believe that it is useful to keep the international authorities constructively engaged," said Iftekhar.
