A colourful spectacle

Traditional boat race held in Barisal

A colourful boat race, popularly known as 'Nouka Baaich', a traditional game of riverine rural Bengal, was held recently on the river Poysharhat at Ramshil, Agoiljhara upazila under Barisal district.
The race was organised by the local Union Parishad and conducted by Ramshil Nouka Baaich Udjapon Committee. The aim was to keep alive the traditional village culture and support local and regional customs.
Eight teams participated in the competition. The boat teams led by Bimal Dhali, Shazan Mollah and Gautam Uza succeeded in bagging the first, second and third places respectively in the race.
Two 21 inch and one 14 inch colour televisions were given as first, second and third prizes and other prizes were distributed among the winners as well.
Thousands of people, including men, women and children from all walks of life, gathered on both sides of the river to enjoy the race. They greeted the teams with thunderous applause.
