Trader fined for selling fish treated with formalin

A mobile court yesterday found that a fish trader is selling formalin-treated fish at Karwan Bazar in the city where a formalin testing centre has been set up around one and a half months ago to check use of formalin in preserving fish, which is harmful to health.
During a drive against food adulteration and weight manipulation at Karwan Bazar, New Market and Lalbagh areas, a joint team of Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI), Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and the police led by executive magistrate of Dhaka district also fined eight shops, including fish and meat shop, Tk 3.18 lakh.
People who often shop at Karwan Bazar said although the authorities have set up the formalin testing centre, its activities are seen rarely.
At Karwan Bazar, the court fined fish trader Mohammad Yusuf Tk 50,000 for selling formalin-treated fish at Karwan Bazar, fish traders Nabi Hossain and Hasan Tk 50,000 each on charges of weight manipulation, fish trader Nurul Tk 8,000 for using wooden scale.
Besides, butchers Jasim and Shaheen of New Market were fined Tk 50,000 each for selling meat of sheep in the name of goat, Century Chemical Company at Champatali Lane in Lalbagh was fined Tk 1 lakh for producing and marketing fake cosmetics products and B'baria Dadhi Bhandar of Karwan Bazar fined Tk 50,000 for having no CM licence from BSTI.
