Doctor killed for dowry

A female physician was allegedly killed by her husband, also a doctor, for dowry at her Bibir Bagicha residence in the city's Uttar Jatrabari yesterday.
The victim was identified as Tamanna Haque, 28, a physician of Gynaecology Department of Mitford Hospital. Her husband Fakrul Islam is also a doctor at the same hospital.
On information, police recovered the body of Tamanna from the bedroom of her house at around 8:00am. The body was hanging from a ceiling fan.
Jatrabari Police Station Officer-in-charge Mohammad Moniruzzaman said they detained Tamanna's mother-in-law Selina Haque, a banker, and two domestic helps of the house for interrogation.
Fakrul is on the run, he said, adding that the body was sent to Sir Salimullah Medical College Morgue for autopsy, he added.
Tamanna, mother of a two-year-old boy Tahmid, committed suicide, her in-laws said, adding that Tamanna locked herself in her bedroom Friday night. They informed police on Saturday morning, as she did not open the door after repeated knocks on the door.
Victim's elder brother Ehsanul Monir, however, said Fakrul along with his father and mother killed Tamanna for dowry and hanged the body from the ceiling fan.
Tamanna's mother-in-law Selina Haque denied the allegation.
Ehsanul said over the phone that Tamanna's in-laws informed him that Tamanna had committed suicide by hanging herself.
He told The Daily Star that in-laws of Tamanna used to torture her both mentally and physically demanding a flat in the capital as dowry.
Tamanna married doctor Fakrul Islam three years back after passing MBBS from Sir Salimullah Medical College in 2005, her brother said.
A case was filed in this connection, police said, adding that Selina was shown arrested in the case while the two domestic helps were released yesterday.
