UGC asks Asian University to shut outer campus

University Grants Commission (UGC) yesterday asked Asian University of Bangladesh (AUB) to immediately stop the activities of its outer campus and distance learning programme.
However, if they want to continue its activities on the university's Motijheel and Dhanmondi campuses, they need to get the approval of UGC.
AUB has also been asked to shift its campus to their own land at Ashulia as soon as possible since the AUB authorities have said that they had purchased a 15-acre land at Ashulia for their own campus.
The directives came at a meeting between the UGC and the AUB at the UGC Bhaban in the city where the overseeing body of all universities in Bangladesh wanted to know about the recent allegations raised against the university regarding its Rajshahi campus and convocation, sources said.
"The university has allegedly done many irregularities, but we have given them a chance to come under rules and regulations," UGC Chairman Prof Nazrul Islam told The Daily Star last night.
He, however, said the UGC would approve the campuses if they seek approval in accordance with the rules.
AUB VC Prof Abul Hassan M Sadeque claimed that the university is not running any activity beyond the law and they would abide by the UGC rules, said sources.
He has also assured UGC that they would shift their campus to their own land at Ashulia as soon as possible, they added.
