President urges Colombian entrepreneurs

President Zillur Rahman yesterday emphasised the need for increasing the volume of foreign direct investment (FDI) by wooing more foreign entrepreneurs for investment in various sectors as an investment-friendly atmosphere prevails in the country.
The president made the remarks when newly appointed Colombian Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr Juan Alfredo Pinto Saavedra presented his credentials to him at Bangabhaban.
Zillur said the Colombian entrepreneurs could invest here by taking advantage of various incentives are on offer for foreign investment.
“Colombian businessmen can invest here considering the prevailing investment-friendly atmosphere as well as the country's cheap labour,” he said.
Mentioning that there is ample scope in bolstering commerce and trade relations between Bangladesh and Colombia, the president said visits by high-profile business delegation and people-to-people contact could be a useful tool in this regard.
He said the two countries are enjoying an excellent bilateral relation and it would be strengthened further during his new tenure.
He said the two countries could explore cooperation in the field of agriculture through transferring technologies. Describing Bangladesh as a peace loving secular democratic country, the president told the new envoy that a good number of members of the country's armed forces are involved in restoring peace at different parts of the world under UN peacekeeping missions.
He also said Bangladesh is always against any kind of terrorist act.
Dr Saavedra, based in New Delhi, sought the president's all-out cooperation in performing his new duty.
He assured Zillur that he would try his level best in increasing trade volumes between the two countries. Dr Saavedra hoped that Bangladesh would be able to emerge as a middle-income country soon under the dynamic leadership of the president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Secretary to the President's Office Mohammad Shafiul Alam, Military Secretary to the President Maj Gen Md Ehtesham Ul Haque, Foreign Secretary M Mijarul Quayes and President's Press Secretary Abdul Awal Howlader were present during the meeting.
