Body of newly-wed man found inside UP office in Rajshahi

Body of a newly-wed man has been found inside a room of Horipur Union Parishad office this morning.

The deceased was Mofazzal Hossain (26), of Juranpur area of Tanore upazila, our Rajshahi staff correspondent reported quoting Golam Ruhul Kuddus, additional deputy commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police.

The man's divorce was supposed to be settled at the parishad today.

Police found Mofazzal's body hanging from a window in the rest room -- for the UP employees.  

The ADC said crime scene experts of the CID were inspecting the site.

Talking to this correspondent, Horipur UP Chairman Bazle Rizvi Hasan Munjil said the man "died by suicide".

He said Mofazzal married a woman of Nolpukur village under Horipur union 12 days back. The woman's family discovered Mofazzal to be a drug addict and decided for divorce, he said.

The Union Parishad was scheduled to sit at 12pm for settling the divorce, he said.

On Saturday night, Mofazzal's family members requested the UP chairman to keep him at the Parishad office as they doubted that he might flee, the chairman said.

Mofazzal's brother Tofazzal Hossain said, the UP chairman threatened his brother of handing him over to the police with drugs if his family failed to pay up Tk 1.5 lakh.

The chairman said, the money was set as "denmohor" (allowance) for the marriage, but none forced him to pay it right away.

"We told him to pay what he can and settle the divorce," the chairman said.
