New MPs to take oath tomorrow

New MPs to take oath tomorrow

The newly elected lawmakers will be sworn in tomorrow, says the Parliament Secretariat.

The announcement came shortly after a gazette was published today notifying the MPs-elect in the 10th parliamentary elections.

Confirming the information, Pranab Chakraborty, additional secretary at the Parliament Secretariat, told The Daily Star: "We will communicate with the media later with other details like time of oath taking."

The gazette contains the list of 290 who won in the election, according the Election Commission sources.

Talking to reporters at the Election Commission secretariat at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital earlier in the day, Election Commissioner Mohammad Shahnewaz said they had sent the gazette to BG Press for publishing.

On January 5, the election was held in 143 seats with 153 MP aspirants elected earlier uncontested.

The EC did not announce results in eight constituencies because voting in many of the polling centres in those seats were suspended due to violence.

Election will be held in the eight constituencies -- Dinajpur-4, Kurigram-4, Gaibandha-1, Gaibandha-3, Gaibandha-4, Jessore-5 and Laksmipur-1 -- on January 16.

Meanwhile, of the 292 MPs-elect, names of 290 were sent for gazette notification.

The EC served the rest two ruling Awami League MP-elects with show cause notices for alleged violation of electoral code.

With the 127 seats it won uncontested earlier, Awami League now remains victorious in 232 out of total 300 constituencies.

Meanwhile, Jatiya Party (JP) won 13 seats while Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) won two and Workers Party (WP) won four seats.
