Netherlands pull off historic win

Progress to Super 10s, Knock out Zimbabwe, Ireland

Ireland 189/4 (20/20 ov)
Netherlands 193/4 (13.5)
Netherlands won by 6 wickets

Netherlands clinched a historic win to reach the Super 10s of the World T20, chading down Ireland's 189-run total in an astonishing 13.5 overs.

The Dutch broke several world records in the process - the fastest team 100 in just 7 overs, the highest number of sixes in a T20 innings - 19, and the most runs in the powerplay - 91.

Stephan Myburgh was the architect of the unbelievable chase - hitting 63 off 23 balls, which included four fours and seven sixes.

After his dismissal in the seventh over, Tom Cooper took over, smashing 45 of just 15 balls.

Wicketkeeper Barresi closed the chase with another hard-hitting 40 from 22 balls, well supported by Ben Copper, Tom's younger brother, who himself hit 9 off 5 balls.

Earlier, Andrew Poynter played a belligerent knock to take Ireland to 189 against Netherlands in their last match of the qualifying round of the World T20 in Sylhet.

Poynter scored 57 off 38 balls, which consisted of four boundaries and four sixes, and was well accompanied by Kevin O’Brien, who himself smashed 42 from 16 balls.

Skipper William Porterfield set up the Irish for the huge total with an early onslaught of 47 from 32 balls.

The Dutch bowlers took a universal pounding, with none of them maintaining an economy rate under 7.

MAA Jamil claimed two Irish scalps, while T van der Gugten took one.

The match is a must-win one for both the teams with Zimbabwe winning their match against United Arab Emirates comfortably by five wickets.

While only a win will be enough for Ireland to progress to the next round, Netherlands will have to win it quick enough to surpass Ireland and Zimbabwe’s net run rate.

Only one team from the four-member group will progress to the Super 10s of the World T20.
