Narayanganj lawyers protest fellow’s ‘abduction’

Hundreds of lawyers of Naryanganj blockaded the Dhaka-Narayanganj Link Road for two hours this morning in protest against what they said abduction of their colleague Chandan Sarkar.

Transport movement on the link road remained suspended during the period, creating heavy traffic congestion.

The lawyers also submitted a memorandum to the superintended of police of Narayanganj demanding his intervention in rescuing Sarker by next 24 hours.

Senior advocate Sarker and his driver remain missing after they went out of the district judge court for his residence around 1:45pm.

Boycotting the court activities, around 300 lawyers started demonstration on the court premises around 9:00am today and also brought out a procession on the premises, reports our Narayanganj correspondent.

At one stage, they blockaded the link road adjacent to the court around 10:30am, halting traffic movement on the highway.

After two hours, they freed the link road and marched towards the office of Narayanganj SP Syed Nurul Islam to submit a memorandum.

In the memorandum, they gave a 24-hour ultimatum to the government to rescue Chandan.  

BNP district unit president Taimur Alam Khandakar, also BNP central unit law affairs secretary and Narayanganj District Lawyers’ Association President Shakhawat Hossain and its general secretary Zakir Hossain, among others, led the procession.

Just before Sarker went missing, Nazrul Islam, councillor of Narayanganj ward 2, and four of his aides along with a car were abducted from Adalatpara in broad daylight.

They were leaving the court area for Dhaka after Nazrul, also former general secretary of Narayanganj Chhatra League, got bail in a case.
