Border Guard Bangladesh personnel arrested one of the accused in Narayanganj sensational seven-murder case in Jessore border area last night, Bangla daily Prothom Alo has reported.

The arrestee, Hasmat Ali alias Hashu, was the third accused in the case filed in connection with the gruesome murders and also a close aide to prime suspect Awami League leader Nur Hossain.

Md Zakaria, additional superintendent of police in Narayanganj who is the convener of the probe committee investigating the incident, confirmed it to the daily today.

When asked about the arrest in the morning, State Minister for Home Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal told The Daily Star that he had just heard about the detention but did not verify it.

This is the first arrest of an accused in the case filed for abduction and killing Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam and six others.
On April 27, Nazrul and his four aides and senior lawyer Chandan Sarker and his driver were kidnapped from the Dhaka-Narayanganj link road around the same time in broad daylight. Six bodies, including that of Nazrul and Chandan, were found floating in the Shitalakkhya river on April 30, and another was found the following day.

The other victims are Swapan, Tajul Islam, Liton, Jahangir and Ibrahim.

Hashu, a terror of Siddhirganj area in Narayanganj city, is the first accused arrested 17 days into the abduction of Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam and six others who were killed later.

With Hasu, police have so far arrested 22 people but failed to nab the prime suspect and four other accused named in the case filed by Nazrul's widow.

Meanwhile, the government drew flak from different quarters for not arresting three officials of Rapid Action Battalion, who were forced into retirement over their alleged role in the murder, despite a High Court order.

Three days into the body recovery of Nazrul, his father-in-law Shahidul Islam has alleged that Rab men killed him in exchange for Tk 6 crore from ward councillor Hossain.

The Rab officials are Commanding Officer of Rab-11 Lt Col Tareque Sayeed Mohammad, Maj Arif Hossain and Lt Commander SM Masud Rana.

Of them Tareque is son-in-law of Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya.

Amid an outcry from the victims' families, political parties and the media, the state minister for home, in an interview told UNB yesterday that the trio would be nabbed today.

On Sunday, the HC ordered the inspector general of police to arrest the three and hand them over to the detectives investigating the sensational case.
