‘Mugger’ killed in ‘gunfight’ in capital

An alleged mugger was killed in a “gunfight” with members of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) at Khilgaon in the capital early today.

A pistol loaded with at least three rounds of bullets was recovered from the spot, Deputy Commissioner (DB-PR) of DMP Masudur Rahman told the Daily Star.

He said a DB team was patrolling the Khilgaon Bishwa Road area on information that an organised gang of criminals were committing mugging in the area regularly at midnight.

Following suspicious movements of several young men in the area, the DB men challenged them near Khilgaon Khidma Hospital at about 3:00am, the DC said.

After being challenged the group started firing at the officials, forcing the detectives to fire back. The ensuing gunfight left one of the muggers, aged about 35, with bullet injuries, the DB official added.

The injured was taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) where doctors declared him dead around 4:00am, he said.

Two DB constables -- Alim and Jony Barua -- were injured in the incident. They were given first aid at Rajarbagh Police Line Hospital, the official added.
