Mufti Izharul, son Harun indicted
A Chittagong court today indicted Hefajat-e Islam Nayeb-e-Ameer Mufti Izharul Islam Chowdhury and his son Harun Bin Izhar over recovery of acid from a madrasa in Chittagong city where an explosion last year killed three people.
Judge SM Mojibur Rahman of Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court in Chittagong framed the charges against the two in connection with the October 7, 2013 incident, said Advocate Fakhruddin Chowdhury, public prosecutor of Chittagong Metropolitan Court.
The court fixed July 15 for starting witness deposition, he said.
Izharul, the founder and principal of Jamiatul Ulum Al Islamia Madrasa, is now on the run while his son Harun in jail, according to court sources.
Three people including two students were killed and several others injured in the explosion at four-storey dormitory of the madrasa in Lalkhan Bazar of Chittagong on October 7, 2013.
After the blast, police seized four handmade grenades and a large amount of bomb-making materials including iron caps, electric cables and 18 bottles of picric acid from the madrasa premises.
Md Lokman, sub-inspector of Khulshi Police Station, submitted the charge sheet in the case against the duo on May 28.
According to the charge sheet, Mufti Izharul and his son stock the acid at the madrasa to conduct subversive activities across the country and make political situation unstable.
On the following day of the blast, two cases were filed -- one under Explosive Substances Act - 1908 and the other under Acid Control Act-2002 -- with Khulshi Police Station.
Later, a murder case was also filed with the police station on October 10 last year.
Mufti Izharul and Harun have been made prime accused all in the cases.
Police submitted the charge sheet in the explosive case on February 10 while in the murder case on June 11.
