Mother of one alleges law enforcers' apathy

Seeks PM's intervention

After getting little response from law enforcers, a woman yesterday appealed to the prime minister to bring her son back who went missing a year ago.
"Throughout last year, I have contacted several law enforcement agencies. But they could not give any clue, some of them did not even respond cordially," the depressed mother, Lipi Akter, alleged at a conference in the capital's Crime Reporters' Association Bangladesh.
Some people posing as Rab personnel whisked away Rafiul Islam Raja, who used to provide alternative power in the neighbourhood, Keraniganj, and his two friends--Nizam Uddin alias Nirjhar and Md Nayeem-- by a white microbus from the front of Lalbagh fort on April 26 last year, said Lipi.
Raja's relative Rony went missing two days after the incident.
Nirjhar and Nayeem were left at different places in Narsingdi with blindfolds and hands tied up respectively 20 and 26 days after their disappearances, said Lipi quoting the duo.
However, Nirjhar and Nayeem did not elaborate the incident, she added.
The Daily Star also tried to contact the duo over the phone after they were released in last May but could not reach them.
The mother suspected that Nirjhar and Nayeem were behind the disappearance as Raja and Rony were still traceless and therefore, she filed a case with Sutrapur Police Station accusing the two on January 22 this year after a long wait.
She also alleged that the investigation officer of the case did not quiz the duo even after repeated appeals.
She also believes that if police officials are directed strictly, they can find clues about the whereabouts of her son and Rony by grilling the duo.
Contacted, IO Arafatul Haque, sub-inspector the police station, told The Daily Star that they could not arrest Nirjhar and Nayeem without proper evidence. The officer also added that they were investigating the incident.
