Mohammad Hanif's 7th death anniversary today

Today is the seventh death anniversary of Mohammad Hanif, the first elected mayor of Dhaka City Corporation and an Awami League (AL) leader.
On the occasion, Mayor Mohammad Hanif Memorial Foundation, AL Dhaka city unit and socio-cultural organisations will, among others, hold doa and milad mahfils and discussions and offer prayers at his grave.
President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in separate messages paid rich tributes to Hanif's memory.
Hamid said Hanif joined active politics in his student life under the tutelage of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and was a devout follower of the latter's ideology.
Hasina said Hanif played a significant role in different democratic movements to free Bangladesh from autocracy. Shirin said Hanif would remain alive forever among the people through his works.
Hanif suffered splinter injuries while shielding AL President Sheikh Hasina during the 21 August, 2004 grenade attack on an AL rally on Bangabandhu Avenue in the capital. Two years later, he suffered a cardiac arrest and died in Apollo Hospital.
