Mirpur SI refuses to confess link

Mirpur Sub-Inspector Jahidur Rahman Khan was sent to jail today after he refused to confess before a magistrate his involvement with the custodial death of garment-waste trader Mahbubur Rahman Sujan.

Earlier in the day, SI Jahid was produced before the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Nuru Miah for recording his confessional statement in connection with the murder.

The magistrate gave Jahid, the prime accused of Sujan murder case, two hours since noon to be prepared for giving his statement regarding the custodial death.

Around 2:00pm, Jahid refused to confess his link when the magistrate called him to record his statement. Later, Magistrate Nuru Miah ordered to send him to jail.

Earlier, the DB inspector Nibaron Chandra Barman, also investigation office of the case, submitted documents before the court saying that Jahid was ready to confess his link with the murder during this remand.

Jahid was produced before the court on completion of his two-day remand placed by Metropolitan Magistrate Snigdha Rani Chakraborty on Thursday.

His informant Nasim Sheikh however confessed to the magistrate on the same day that he was with SI Jahid the night police picked up Sujan, who died of torture later.

In his statement, Nasim said on July 13 a team of about seven to eight people, including five cops and Nasim, went to Sujan's residence and picked him up.

They also picked up Sujan's wife Momtaz Sultana Lucy and their five-year-old son Rabbi when Sujan refused to pay extortion money. Sujan was tortured at his house, in the police van and at the police station, said Nasim.

Nasim said the next day one of the cops informed him that Sujan died.

Jahid was earlier placed on a 12-day remand in three phases.

SI Jahid was arrested on July 16 following an autopsy report, which revealed that Sujan had died of torture. Law enforcers nabbed Nasim the same day after examining CCTV footage of the police station.    

On July 20, Lucy filed a murder case with a Dhaka court accusing Officer-in-Charge of Mirpur Police Station Salahuddin and SI Jahid and eight others under the Torture and Custodial Death (Protection) Act-2013.
