BNP today alleged that militancy has risen in the country during the tenure of Awami League-led government.

“After the recent video message of al-Qaeda leader Ayman al Zawahiri, it is now clear that militancy has risen in the country during the Awami League rule," said Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, acting secretary general of BNP.

Fakhrul, also the spokesperson of BNP, was talking to reporters after visiting the party's standing committee member RA Ghani at Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital in the capital city of Dhaka. Ghani was admitted to the hospital last night with pain in his chest.

"The government has paved the way for creating an atmosphere to raise militancy as they do not believe in democracy," he added.

Earlier on September 3, in the 56-minute video posted online, Zawahiri announced the creation of a wing of "al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent” to "raise the flag of jihad" across South Asia.

Zawahiri said the formation of the branch would be good news for Muslims in Myanmar, Bangladesh and in the Indian states of Assam, Gujarat and Jammu and Kashmir, where they would be rescued from injustice and oppression.

Pointing out the video, Fakhrul said the militancy rises when democratic environment does not exist in a country. There is no democracy in the country.
