Many missing as trawler sinks in Bay

42 rescued so far, 5 critically ill

Many went missing as a trawler carrying more than 100 overseas jobseekers capsized in the Bay of Bengal near Kutubdia of Cox's Bazar early today while going to Malaysia illegally.

Seeing the sinking trawler around 5:00am, a patrol team of coastguard rushed to the spot and rescued 31 passengers from the southwestern Bay, reports our Cox’s Bazar correspondent.

The rescued people including three human traffickers were handed over to local police later, Tareq Mustofa, in-charge of Kutubdia coastguard camp, said around 11:00am. They are mostly from Narsingdi district.

The coastguard members are conducting an operation with a trawler to rescue the missing people, Mustofa said.

Police are looking into the matter, said Angsha Tu Iay, officer-in-charge of Kutubdia Police Station.
