Mannan was killed likely for his bid to resist crimes

Attempt to prevent crimes like snatching, robbery and drug dealing in the area might be the reason behind the murder of Jessore town unit Awami Swechchhasebak League president Abdul Mannan.

Three masked criminals shot and stabbed to death Mannan, 50, at his business establishment M/s AM Trader at Bejpara in Jessore town on Saturday evening.  

Mannan, also president of anti-crime organisation Bejpara Defense Party, formed a team to resist snatching, robbery and drug dealing by some youths of Bihari Colony, TB Clinic and adjacent areas, and it might be the reason behind the murder, said locals, relatives, and friends.           

However, Shahidul Islam, officer-in-charge of Kotwali police station, who was closed to the police lines at about 11:00pm on Saturday, had said after the murder that it could be a sequel to feud over custom auction business as Mannan was also involved in the business.

Mannan, a resident of Bejpara-Mahafuz Road in Jessore town, was the son Abdul Mazid of Chandpara in Jessore Sadar upazila. 

Locals including the activists of ruling Awami League and its front organisations staged demonstrations in the town demanding arrest of the killers within three days while traders kept their business outlets in Bejpara area closed yesterday protesting the gruesome killing.

Police arrested two suspects although no case was filed in this connection, said Reshma Sharmin, assistant SP, Jessore.

"We are investigating on some clues which cannot be disclosed now," she said.
