Man shot dead in Khagrachhari

Armed miscreants gunned down a man and injured a schoolgirl in Laxmichhari upazila of Khagrachhari this morning.

The deceased Joy Kumar Chakma, 45, was a resident of Jurgachhari area in the upazila, reports our Khagrachari correspondent quoting Shahjahan Hossain, assistant superintendent of police (Ramgarh circle) of the district.

The injured Kalpa Rani Chakma was a student of Class-IX.

A group of United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) people equipped with firearm went to Jurgachhari area intending to attack on their counterpart PCJSS men over establishing supremacy in the area, ASP Shahjahan said.

Sensing presence of the UPDF activists, local members of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS) chased them around 8:30am, he added.

Being chased by the PCJSS men, the UPDF activists opened firing indiscriminately that left Joy Kumar spot dead and Kalpa Chakma critically injured, ASP Shahjahan said adding that they managed to flee the scene shortly after the firing.

When contacted, Niron Chakma, press and information secretary of the UPDF, denied involvement of his party men in the attack and said that it was an outcome of internal conflict of the PCJSS.

The injured school girl Kalpa Chakma was taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital in critical condition.

On information, police recovered the body sent it to Khagrachhari Adhunik Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
