Man shot as Shibir men clash with cops in Sylhet

Police being attacked by Shibir men open fire in Bogra; no injury reported

A man was hit by a bullet during a clash between the activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, and police in Sylhet today.

Bullet-injured Rubel Ahmed, driver of the human-hauler requisitioned by police, is undergoing treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.

Meanwhile, Bogra police fired rubber bullets after Shibir men hurled two crude bombs targeting the law enforcers, who resisted their procession brought out in the town demanding release of their leaders and activists arrested in different cases. However, none was hurt in the attack.

Police detained the Shibir Bogra Azizul Haque College unit president and seven others from the scene.

SYLHET

A clash erupted between the activists of Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, when the law enforcers resisted their procession brought out from Darga gate area in the city around 11:30am.

At one stage, police fired over 30 gunshots to disperse the activists who charged 10 crude bombs targeting the law enforcers on the VIP Road, Mohammad Rahamat Ullah, additional deputy commissioner of Sylhet Metropoluitan Police (SMP), told our Sylhet correspondent.

Rubel received a bullet in his abdomen during the clash, police said.

However, the law enforcers are yet to confirm whether Rubel was injured by the bullets fired by police.

A Shibir man was arrested from the scene. 

BOGRA

Police fired rubber bullets when Shibir men hurled two crude bombs targeting the law enforcers at Shatmatha in the town this morning.

Soon after the clash, police detained eight persons including Shibir Bogra Azizul Haque College unit president Shamiul Islam Shamim from the spot.

The other detainees included four Shibir men -- Moshfiqur Rahman, Kayes uddin, Abdul Motin and Shariful Islam -- and outsiders Ujjal, Shah Alam and Rezaul as suspect.

The clash ensued when around 200 Shibir men gathered in front of Bogra Press Club and tried to bring out a procession around 8:30am.

Sensing possible chaos in the area, policemen rushed the spot, prompting the activists to charge two crude bombs targeting them, said Uzzal Kumar Roy, assistant superintendent of police (B Circle) of Bogra.

In reply, police fired seven rubber bullets to disperse them and later detained the five Shibir men with a crude bomb and three persons as suspects.

A case will be filed against the eight detainees under the Explosives Substance Act, the ASP said.
