Man 'murdered' in rehab centre

A man was allegedly beaten to death in a rehabilitation centre in Halishahar of Chittagong city yesterday.

The dead -- Nezam Uddin Munna, 28 -- was the son of Omar Faruk of South Halishahar Bandartila area.

Munna's brother Mohiuddin Roni said his brother was a drug addict and was admitted to Chhayaneer Drug-Addict Rehabilitation Centre on October 23.

“Since then, they had been torturing my brother. They did not provid him with proper treatment even when he fell sick."

"The centre authority informed us in the morning [yesterday] that my brother was suffering from dysentery and was very sick. But upon reaching there, we found him dead and saw injury marks on his head and back," alleged the bereaved brother.

Munna's widow Merry filed a murder case against five directors of the rehabilitation centre yesterday afternoon.

Of the accused, Abdul Baten was arrested while Dulal Sarker, Biplab, Jashim and Pranab were absconding.

The body was taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Both morgue sources and police confirmed multiple injury marks on Munna's body.

However, the actual reason behind his death could be known after the post mortem report, said Officer-in-Charge Abu Mohammed Shahjahan Kabir of Halishahar Police Station.

“Drives are on to arrest the rest of the absconding accused," he added.
