Man killed, cop hurt in Mymensingh road crash

The driver of a CNG-run auto-rickshaw was killed and a policeman injured this morning after being hit by a rice-laden truck on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Bhaluka upazila of Mymensingh.

The deceased was identified as Lal Mahmud Kha, our Mymensingh correspondent reports quoting Golam Sarwar, officer-in-charge of Bhaluka Police Station.

The injured policeman Hazrat Ali, an assistant sub-inspector of the local police station, was undergoing treatment at Bhaluka Upazila Health Complex,

A miscreant hijacked the truck from Gazipur and was driving it away when ASI Ali hired the CNG auto-rickshaw to chase the vehicle around 7:30am, OC Sarwar said.

At one stage, Ali tried to intercept the truck but the vehicle ran over the auto-rickshaw, leaving the rickshaw driver Mahmud dead and Ali injured, the OC added.

Protesting the road crash, locals barricaded the highway for one hour soon after the accident.
