Poetry : A Pair of Lalon Songs

Man is the Measure

(bhobe manush guru nishtha jar)

Serve your human guru first

With your heart and soul

If you feel like fulfilling

Your yearnings in this world.

In lakes and rivers and canals

It's the self-same water that prevails,

My lone lord roams from home to home

In humans he turns manifold.

Pure light at first, he anon

Assumed myriad forms then on—

The truth is evident to the enlightened,

Man's the final form of God it's told.

Arguments won't take you far;

Want him? Listen to your heart.

Siraj Sain warns: "Listen, Lalon,

In dialectics don't get enthralled.".
