ART EXHIBITION: FRAGMENTED UNITY BY KAZI SALAHUDDIN AHMED

Built by the Mughals and developed as the provincial centre of commerce of the eastern part of Bengal, Dhaka is a cornucopia of faiths, cultures and traditions. Ahmed's works spring from this heterogeneous mix, where lives of peoples are marked by the joy of proximity fuelling a strong sense of belongingness.
His works are an invocation of both the past and the present — the decaying old order and the new spirit!

DANCES FOR EVERYONE: MERCE CUNNINGHAM'S FIELD DANCES
Date: Friday, 02 February– Sunday, 04 February
Venue: National Art Gallery, Bangladesh, Segun Bagicha, Ramna
Field Dances was choreographed by Merce Cunningham in 1963. The structure and performance of the dance are indeterminate: it can be done by any number of dancers, last any length of time, and be performed in any space. The material for the dance includes a series of simple movement phrases incorporating everyday movement like walking, running, skipping, falling, sitting, and leaning.
The instructions for the phrases are both precise and open-ended, offering dancers opportunities to make choices while performing.
Cunningham's subtitle for the dance, "Dances for Everyone," refers to his intention that the choreography can be done by people with varying levels of dance training and experience.
The session will begin by teaching several of the movement phrases and explaining the instructions governing how these phrases may be performed in the space. Participants will be given the opportunity to explore and experiment with the material, and devise ways of interacting with fellow participants. The workshop will culminate in a group performance of Field Dances.
4TH DHAKA ART SUMMIT

Venue: Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy
Arranged and primarily funded by the Samdani Art Foundation, DAS 2018 will be held in a public-private partnership with the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, the country's National Academy of Fine and Performing Arts, with the support of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and Ministry of Information of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, in association with the Bangladesh National Museum.
DAS will feature more than 300 artists in ten curated exhibitions, along with programming that includes 120 speakers over 16 talks and two symposiums.
The previous edition in 2016 welcomed over 138,000 visitors in four days, and operated tours for 2,500 students from over 30 schools. Those participating included over 300 emerging and established artists, as well as internationally renowned curators and writers from over 70 international institutions.
