Of Aztec prints and more

The latest trend on the global fashion scene is all about geometric prints inspired by indigenous motifs. When it comes to these edgy patterns it is best to pair them with a simple, or monochrome look or you may risk looking like the inside of a bioscope, and also be the reason for seizure attacks and mild headaches of passersby.

Dresses

Dresses in ethnic inspired patterns are not only fun, but also flattering to the figure. The texture allows the wearer to either highlight, or minimalise — based on your body type. For daytime, pair it with a denim/leather jacket, a simple golden chain, or a wrist watch, and bracelets. As an evening wear, pair it with chunky metallic accessories, or a black sequined jacket.

This year has been all about pastels, and their polar opposite bright hues. In the same sense, it is time to retire some of those chequered, or striped patterns and make room for some abstract and geometric shapes and lines, respectively.

T-shirts/tops

Keep in mind that the Aztec or any other indigenous motif inspired look can very easily translate from boho-chic sort to refined and sleek. There are plenty of options to choose from, such as off-shoulders, to semi-casual shirts, and even tops with batwing sleeves — they look best when paired with your favourite pair of pants, let that be denims or cotton pants (with self-print also works).  Just make sure the pants do not have any crazy patterns on them, or embellishments.

As an evening look, pair a T-shirt in a similar pattern with slim fit pants and a fitted black formal jacket, or even one with padded shoulders, golden hoops and your favourite pair of sexy black stilettoes.

There are also great T-shirt options for men as well in tribal prints, which when coupled with a simple pair of your favourite ripped jeans, messy hair and a stubble to give off those Rastafarian vibes.

Shrugs

A personal favourite, nothing says fun and flirty like an ethnic inspired geometric patterned shrug that goes great with dresses, pants and even kurtis, if styled the right way. Yes, you heard it right! Simple white kurti/anarkali (with minimal embellishments), or even another complementing colour (just make sure it is in a solid tone), paired with jeans, leggings or slim pants in either black or white and a short-waisted length shrug and kolapuris to match it.

A hint of silver or oxidised accessories, either on the ears or wrist and voila! The next fashionista has arrived. Pair knee length shrugs with something more western like dresses or pants.

Pants/leggings

Nothing beats a great pair of printed pants that too tribal inspired. Mix and match it, or as a contrast, pair it with your favourite crop top or halter blouse. A safe bet is to opt for black and white patterned pants with tribal motifs that can be paired with the humble white, or black top or even a bright/neon hued blouse.

Just remember to make sure the top part is kept as a plain as possible. Another fun option, which is not only restricted for vacationing only, is to pair a tribal pattern inspired jumpsuit, accessorised with a statement piece (only) around the neck or ears.
