Lo and behold!

The perfect groom enters

Always impeccably dressed, Mehruz Munir reminds us that a large portion of sophistication lies in how a man dresses himself confidently. Sitting across the creative mind of Zurhem, I felt the urge to ask him all there was to know about fashion and styling. With the wedding season rushing at us with all its intensity, I reckoned this was the ideal opportunity to inquire the maestro all there was to know about the fashionable groom's wardrobe selection.

Munir suggested four different looks for the modern day groom, who wants to look charming, stylish and most importantly comfortable on his 'special day'.

THE NEHRU SUIT

This look has been made popular by none other than Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, one of the paramount leaders of the Indian independence movement. Although foreign in origin, the very look had been adapted by many of our forefathers and as fashion trends follow a cyclical drift, the style has returned on the fashion scene in 2016.

Munir, prefers to define the Nehru jacket as a hip-length tailoured coat with a Mandarin collar and buttons all the way down. He suggested matching formal pants to go with the suit. Munir's suggestion was that the groom could match the colour of his Nehru suit with that of his 'lady love'.

As for accessories, pocket squares are a must, says a convinced Munir. "You can also add-in fancy buttons on the Nehru Jacket to stand out amongst the crowd, looking suave and downright stylish. Some people use precious stones, others use gold buttons to highlight their look". According to Munir, the Nehru Suit is a preferred look for the Reception or Boubhat.

THE VESTED SUIT

Well-versed in men's fashion, Mehruz Munir indicated that this was the look that was preferred by most men who wanted to make an impression and feel equally comfortable. This look could be appropriate for both the wedding ceremony and the reception. Some men who feel uncomfortable wearing the traditional sherwani could easily opt out for this.

In this particular getup, the designer suggests experimenting with vests and keeping the suit down to the bare minimum just to strike a balance of style and class. The entire ensemble can be amped up by wearing colourful and graphic fashion ties.  A simple example could be the navy blue suit paired with red, polka-dotted, slim ties.  Standard, classic shirts need to be donned to pull off this look. Collar pins, lapel pins, and pocket squares go exceptionally well with this look.

THE MAHARAJA LOOK

Bengali weddings are incomplete without the introduction of the traditional sherwani, pagri and a pair of nagra. No matter how much we try to accept foreign influences , our own heritage and traditions demand dedication and support. Most men would agree that only the sherwani can make them look exceptional and stand out amongst the crowd, especially when so many are invited as guests.

"The wonderful thing about sherwanis is that they can be worn in almost all colours without running the risk of looking tacky. A typical twist that can be offered is classic pants, dhotis instead of the churidars and shalwars. The modern day groom can also wear dressy loafers or slip-ons instead of the familiar nagra with the sherwani," says Mehruz Munir.

THE SUAVE TUXEDO

"Personally, I think this is an exceptional look for the reception and all future grooms could give it a try." Munir says, "One should wear the bib shirt, a bow tie and a kamarband with this look". The typical wedding tuxedos of today comprise of the single buttoned, suit cut with satin lapels.  There can be variations in the lapel design. Based on the designer's suggestions the fashionable accessories should be lapel pins and sometimes pocket squares. "However apprehensive, one may be, no one can look unreasonable in a black tuxedo and classic oxfords".

Based on experience, Mehruz Munir may have simplified all the looks for us but there are a lot of hard work and detailing that goes behind the production of each of the looks mentioned. Luckily, for the grooms, Zurhem gladly looks after all the details without having to burden the groom with extra worries concerning his wedding day look. Zurhem, the designer store for men, has many looks that can be customised for the grooms, based on their personality and preference.
